The photo depicts the lived environment of approximately 200 families residing at the Forest Cove Apartments located in the Thomasville Heights neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia.

It may be hard to imagine that families for years have raised their children and worked to support their family all while living in an unsafe and poorly maintained housing complex.

Let’s be clear, poverty is a symptom of long-standing historic and systemic oversight of communities like Forest Cove.

The ability to thrive in spite of difficulties, to make a way for your remaining children in spite of loss, to plan for a future that might be greater than is possible to imagine, is resilience. But there are still dark reminders that need a chance to be heard and responded to with compassion and urgency:

“Imagine walking into a dark room, turning off the lights, and hearing the sound [tap, tap, tap], and feeling things crawl on you. That’s what it’s like living there.”

Due to the generous support of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, wellness is within reach for the families of Forest Cove.
